Pemaquid Lighthouse.

A slow exposure Black and White image

A slow exposure Black and White image

This was the second Lighthouse for me the day I met up with David, Cecil and Lou in Maine. We worked all the usual and unusual angles of composition. This is one shot I liked.  Image made with Canon 5d Miii and 24x105 lens. On top of my Sirui N3204x tripod and K-30 Ball head. I used a Tiffen IRND 10 stop filter in mid day light. The image is edited in Lightroom CC and Nik Silver Effects.

Artistic Photography

Happy Hour.

Happy Hour.

The hour before and after sunrise and sunset is Happy Hour for photographers.  The golden hours are the times when true artistry from Mother Nature takes place. This image is a creative artsy vision I had when I snapped a few shots of the fisherman going to work. If you have never visited fishing villages of Maine or Cape Ann in Massachusettes there are always cool images to be created with the many boats and compositions available. Go explore these areas and let your vision grow.  Image made with Canon 7d Miii and Sigma 70x200 F/8 ISO 200 shutter speed of 1/500 of a second at 110mm. Gear on top of a Sirui N3204x and K-30 ball head. Carried in a Lowepro Flipside 500 and Peak Design Slide Strap and Capture Pro. Viewed in ON1 photo 10.5 and created in Effects and Nik Color Pro 4 and LRCC. Join me in Cape Ann in June for a workshop.

Parenting

A family of geese.

A family of geese.

So yesterday after Amelia's doctors appointment, we stopped to feed the "duckies". I was hoping to see some geeselings and we found these little older ones. To Amelia they were babies. Well anyhow this shot was at 24mm. So they got pretty close. I had Amelia sit on my lap so I could protect her if I needed too. But this strange thing happened. When I pulled Amelia close the mother (I think) relaxed. We were literally 2 feet away from each other. Naturally when the camera was out she got a little tense. So I kept it short and sweet. She chased several other geese and ducks away. Even after the kids had enough bread to sink them like submarines as they went in the water. Wildlife and nature is about respecting  each other's habitats. People so often think it's our rights to violate animals spaces. Now this was at a park where hundreds of people go every day. But that didn't mean I shouldn't respect the geese and their babies spaces. It meant we needed to respect each other.  Image made with a Canon 5dmiii and 24x105 l series lens. Aperture priority mode f/5.6 ISO 800 resulting in a shutter speed of 1/800 of a second at 24mm. Camera Carried on my Peak Design Slide strap. Edited in LRCC and On1

Slowing Down

Slowing Down

Slowing Down

In photography circles, we talk a lot about slowing water so we an get a dreamy effect. Take a few moments if you would to think about that. But apply it to your life and to a different degree, your photography. Slow down and look at things in new ways. Disect your subjects and appreciate all the perspectives offered to you.

This image isn't from the Smoky Mountains. In fact it is from Enders Falls in Conneticut. It's been almost a year since I went on a workshop with my friends David Akoubian and Cecil Holmes. But one thing I learned was to slow down. It had a lot to do with really taking in the beauty that GSMNP has to offer. But even more it was about enjoying the time and memories. David and Cecil have sold out the Smoky Mountain workshop but head over to Nature in Focus Worshops page   http://www.natureinfocusworkshops.com/ to check out their other workshops. I believe there are still a few opening for the Grand Teton and Acadia NP workshops!

A small boat house in the harbor area. Cape Ann, MA.

This little storage shed is a rather iconic little dwelling right next to Motif #1. One of the most photographed buildings ever. A friend of mine Mike Moats visited the area a few years ago and took a shot of this very window. I've been here a dozen times and I always find another image to make. So visit the familiar places as often as your able. Sony a7 with Sony 24x240 at f11 ISO 400 Shutter speed 1/1000 of a second. Edited in On1 Photo 10.

What kind of photographer are you?

Bash Bish Falls

Is one of those questions non photographers ask every now and again. It made me thnk. Do they mean landscape, wedding or event? Or do they mean an artsy, technical or the inbetween go with the flow type? I am sure my collegues in the photography worlds would agree there are those three types and the ones that think they are all of the above. I find the best shooters are those who fall in the middle with a strong understanding on where they want to grow with their craft. With that said i suggest checking out the areas that may be weaknesses in your skill set. If you are artsy, try some technical stuff. If you are a purest, try editing. if you tend to shoot everything spend some time on one specific area, like macro or landscape. Tekki's push your artsy side and see what happens! Go with the flow it may open your worls to thing you never dreamt of.

Black and White

Not everything is black and white. Sometimes you make plans for the future. Only to find out in the future you need to change your plans. Nothing is more true than in the photography profession. Especially when you have a family who needs you. Try your best to stay the course of your original destination. Even when that course seems impossible. Maybe you will have to take a slightly different rout on your journey. Or maybe it will be more expensive or take longer. What ever you do never give up! Life isn't black and white.

Reservoirs.

A little brook I found today.

I made this image today up by Otis reservoir. I had reached out to local Facebook Friends who knew about Cobble Mountain reservoir. It had been locked down since 9-11.  I wondered the entire time I scouted the area for potential places to shoot, why just Cobble Mountain? Why not Otis? Ashley or Quabbin? I really can't figure out why this one reservoir is so highly enforced? Anyhow shot taken with a Sony a7 with a Sony 24x240 at f 20 ISO 50 exposure Compensation -.3 resulting in 1.5 second shutter speed. I would have loves a Tamron 15x30 for this shot. Edited in LR CC and On1 Photo 10

Creative Editing

Black and White Edit with OnOne Perfect Suite 9

Birding and Nature photography has become one of my favorite kinds of photography. The topic came up about editing wildlife. So in this image I pushed my creative side rather than sticking with the norm. Art is art. It doesn't have to be part of the perfect nature image to enjoy it. Here is an image I shot with Sony a7 and Tamron 150x600. the image is a fill 6000x4000 file cropped down 20% The meta data is scary to think about. ISO6000 f8 shutter speed of 1/1000. I quickly did the crop and a little tonal adjustments in Lightroom CC and took it into OnOne Perfect Suit 9 for artistic creativity. I tweaked the minor noise in Enhance then did the rest in Effects and Black and White. I am please with the results.

Amelia Gardens

Amelia Gardens Westfield,MA

Today we went and spent a little while shooting flowers over at Amelia Gardens. It wasn't a great macro day. But it was a great day to be creative with my equipment. This shot was taken on the Sony a7 with Tamron 180 macro via  Metabone's adapter. I set my aperture wide open and focused on the leaf of this rose.  I planned on making the image soft and pastel like in Lightroom CC and OnOne Perfect Suite 9.

Today makes our visit a little more special. It is Amelia's 17 month Birth Day! Happy Birthday to Daddy's little girl!
